Breastfeeding Method

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding alone for the first 6 months and then continuing for at least 2 years. Breastfeeding helps in bonding with your baby. It also allows you to lose the extra weight gained during pregnancy. Breast milk provides the best possible nourishment for your baby. Breast milk is easily digested. It protects babies from many infections, fever and can delay the development of some allergies. It has great immunity power.

The basic breastfeeding method starts with the finding the suitable feeding posture that is comfortable for both you and your baby. A steep back chair with pillows or cushions will be suitable. Hold the baby diagonally across your body, and keep her head, neck and shoulders in a straight line. Then, line up baby’s nose with your nipple so as her mouth opens towards the breast. Check that her head tilts back slightly and her mouth will move into the right position to suckle.

The way your baby takes to the breast is known as ‘attaching’. It will stimulate your milk supply, if she does that correctly. Always make sure that the baby’s mouth is open wide, so that her chin will be touching your breast. But her nose will be clear, so she will be able to breathe easily. You can see a rhythmic suck and swallow pattern, when she starts feeding.  If you feel any sort of pain, detach her slowly by slipping your little finger into her mouth and later attaching again.

The baby should allow finishing the first breast and then move on to the other. When she had enough, she will move away from the breast or will fall asleep. Wake up the sleepy baby to feed more. Finally, give the baby the chance to burp after the feed. It is done by putting her over one shoulder or holding her on your lap with your hand under her chin. Then, gently rub her back for a few minutes using slow and circular movements.

When it comes for feeding two babies, always try to feed one at a time. Feeding two babies becomes easier with practice. The milk supply from your side will increase to meet the additional demand of the two babies. But it very important to remember that to feed the babies at different times and at different speeds.
